If you are a millennial, you might have noticed that the way in which you and your friends are thinking about your careers is remarkably different from the way in which previous generations thought about theirs. There is, of course, always going to be such a shift over time, but rarely is there such a dramatic and sudden one as there has been in this case.
The truth is that people are now turning away from many of the older ways of doing things, and adopting entirely new approaches to work which the world is only just starting to get used to. But what are these changes, and of what nature are they? In this post, we are going to look at just a few of the ways in which many millennials are changing their careers.
1. Working On The Go
One thing that is becoming especially popular amongst millennials, and also people of older generations to a certain extent, is working while travelling. There are many benefits to this, but for a lot of people, it is simply a powerful way to be able to marry these two important parts of life and so make better use of one’s time overall. If you are struggling to decide between travelling and working, you might simply decide to do both at once.
What’s more, there are actually many ways in which you might be able to do this. You could, for instance, become a travel nurse. If you are wondering ‘what is travel nursing?’ then it’s actually very simple, and it’s what it sounds like. Essentially, you just travel to different places and work as a nurse in each place. As you can see, even more, traditional roles can be adopted while travelling.
2. Freelancing
Freelancers have always existed to some extent or another, of course, so it is hardly surprising that you might have already come across them in previous generations. However, it is a fact that there are more freelancers working now than ever before, and there are many good reasons why that might be the case.
Most notably, being one’s own boss is usually a pretty good idea, and it is something that a lot of people are doing as a way of turning against many of the systems of the past they see as corrupt or antiquated. You can also enjoy much more freedom with freelancing, which is a priority that many people consider particularly important these days.
3. Child-Rearing
One other huge change is that more and more, people are choosing their careers over having children. That doesn’t mean that they are not having them at all, merely that they are now more likely than ever to forge a career for many years first, even well into their thirties, and then think about children after the fact.
Whatever the reasons behind this, it makes for a generation of people who are decidedly more interested in their careers, and that is something that is going to generate a new working culture before our very eyes.
