Macademia Nuts are not something I get very often. They are kind of pricey, maybe because I live in the Northeast USA and they grown in the rainforests of Australia, Brazil, Central America, South Africa, and Hawaii.
Macademia trees grow to be about 40-50 feet and they start to produce nuts at about age 7. There are 7 different species of nuts but only 2 are edible and cultivated for eating and sale.
Health Benefits of Macadamia Nuts
These nuts are high in mono-unsaturated fats, like oleic acid and palmitoletic acid. Studies have shown that these fats can help lower LDL cholesterol and increase HDL levels.
Macadamias are an excellent source of minerals such as calcium, iron, magnesium, manganese, selenium, and zinc. 100 g nuts provide 3.6 µg of selenium, which is an important antioxidant co-factor.
They are high in B vitamins, especially:
- Bniacin
- riboflavin
- and thiamin
They also have small amounts of Vitamins A and E, both fat soluble vitamins that are also important anti-oxidants, which work to prevent free radical damage to the body.
Macadamia nuts are high in fiber and are a good source of protein. They contain all of the essential amino acids as well as some non-essential amino acids. Protein is important for muscle growth and repair, as well as proper immune system function
How to Use Macadamia Nuts
