Most people don’t immediately think of fitness when looking at someone riding an electric scooter (e-scooter). But e-scooters can provide much more than just hours of riding fun. People all over the world are discovering the health benefits of electric scooters. Not only are they an environmentally friendly, compact, and fun way to commute, they also provide a range of health benefits, including improved fitness.
In this Juiced article, they found that just 45 minutes of riding an e-bike burned 498 calories. And while we couldn’t find stats to support that e-scooters also burn calories, the case is made quite easily. Both forms of transportation assist the rider in providing speed and power, but both also require using your leg and core muscles to stay balanced and on course. While we can’t yet accurately measure the number of calories you burn, we can say that e-scooters offer a good workout. Here’s why:
1. E-scooters Build Core Strength
The balance required to ride an e-scooter improve core strength and stability. Your core muscles are necessary to stabilize your entire body as you ride along with twists, turns, bumps, and hills. You may not believe it at first, but you will certainly feel it in your muscles after a long ride. Riding an e-scooter is good for improving abdominal, pelvic, and back muscles and may even prove beneficial for stabilization in the case of lower back issues.
2. E-scooters Build Leg Strength
Like your core muscles, your leg muscles are used to balance and stabilize your body on the e-scooter. You will likely notice just how much you’ve been using your leg muscles after your first ride. Many people describe their legs feeling like jello after their first e-scooter ride. That’s because while you were having fun, your legs were getting a workout! Consistently riding an e-scooter will help strengthen your glutes and thigh muscles.
3. Great Low-Intensity Workout
E-scooters offer a good low-intensity workout without leaving you feeling completely exhausted. This form of exercise allows you to start slow and get a good workout without feeling like you need to push yourself too hard. Remember, it really is working your muscles, and you’re liable to suffer delayed muscle soreness if you ride for too long when first getting started.
Once you get used to riding your e-scooter, you can increase the intensity of your workout by changing your route, going on different terrain, or even tackling some smaller hills. You’ll be amazed at how much better you’ll get at taking those tight turns at a faster speed!
4. E-Scooters Provide a Motivating Workout
Is there any form of exercise that sounds more fun than riding an e-scooter? This form of exercise keeps your body active while also exploring your surroundings in a fun way, keeping your mind entertained.
E-scooter users report that they explore their neighborhoods more than they ever could on a traditional bike or scooter due to personal limitations such as injury or dexterity issues. It may not be an intense workout, but it still raises your heart rate for a longer duration.
Using your e-scooter as a form of exercise is also easier to stick to than most workout programs. If it gets you off of the couch and working your muscles, it counts as exercise!
