On average, college students have 3 to 6 hours of free time per day or 21 to 42 hours per week. While that's a lot of time, it can feel like nothing if you don't know how to use it. College parties, drinking, and other social events are popular ways most students spend their free time. Although these are fun, you should also engage in activities that will positively impact your life, mental health, and academics. If you're unsure of the best ways to spend your free time in college, consider any of the following options.
Volunteer for a cause
If you have some spare time, consider volunteering for a good cause. Think of this as a meaningful way to make a difference in the lives of others and contribute to the community. There are usually two options available. The first option is to join a cause your college supports. Some colleges partner with local nonprofits or organize volunteer programs of their own. It could be tutoring underprivileged children, participating in environmental initiatives, or helping at a local shelter. The second option is to give a helping hand to a charity organization outside your school. You can donate resources, money, time, or talent in many ways. Volunteering not only occupies your time but also gives you a fulfilling experience.
Read for pleasure
Endless course materials, assignments, and textbooks can make you dread reading anything. But make time to read for pleasure, as it allows you to explore new worlds, gain knowledge, and stimulate your imagination. Pick books about subjects you love or are curious about so you don't become bored. You can also choose a book from your favorite genre or explore different literary works to broaden your perspectives on topics you may not be exposed to in class. For example, with the 4th of July only a few days gone, you can read about freedom in the Bible to get a different perspective on the subject. You can join a book club or discuss your favorite reads with friends. Doing this can foster intellectual conversations.
Disconnect from your electronic gadgets
Most college students are almost always on their phones, playing video games, or using their laptops for nonacademic work during their free time. It's healthy to disconnect from all screens and digital platforms once in a while when you're free. Spend some of your free time observing and appreciating your physical environment. You can go for leisure walks with friends or alone if you prefer. You can even rest to rejuvenate your mind and body or indulge in an offline hobby.
Studies show that fitness can enhance concentration and motivate a person to perform better. It’s also worth noting that working out can improve your studies and productivity. Unfortunately, many college students prefer to party, hang out, and have fun but ignore exercising. Try using some of your free time to exercise; you can join a gym, fitness group or even work out in your dorm. If you are interested in sports, consider joining a sports team.
