Education and Training in Ayurvedic Practice and Medicine

Ayurveda training courses can be taken to gain an education in Ayurvedic knowledge through online learning programs. But given that Ayurvedic knowledge transcends time by consisting of texts that are thousands of years old, it can be hard to know where to begin your journey of knowledge when on your own.

Don't worry – you're not alone! Many people can feel overwhelmed when taking in all of the different information about Ayurveda. This is because the knowledge stems back to thousands of years ago and, since then, many have passed down the teachings via written work and through oral teaching. However, many experts in Ayurvedic practice believe that there are three major texts, known as ‘the Great Trilogy', that cover the major components of Ayurvedic medicine. These are generally known as the ‘Caraka Samhita', the Sushruta Samhita' and the ‘Astanga Hridaya'.

The three are all important for the teachings within, but many believe the Caraka Samhita (also known as the Compendium of Caraka) and the Sushruta Samhita (also known as Susruta's Compendium) to be two of the foundational Hindu Ayurvedic texts.

Both books cover approaches to the importance of diet, the need for hygiene, surgical training, and the need for a cohesive relationship between physicians, nurses, and patients. Not only does it have great historical importance for India and healthcare training worldwide, but also many have benefited mentally, emotionally, spirituality and physically from its teachings. To learn more about these great ancient texts, it is wise to look for Ayurveda courses to help students by training them to better understand the knowledge within.

Will They Cover Aspects Of Mental Health?

Diploma courses in Ayurveda offer people of all professions and persuasions – healthcare professionals or not – training to understand the deep, traditional aspects of Ayurvedic knowledge. These diploma courses are even used by sufferers of ailments. While this healthcare system has been shown to have benefits to those with physical ailments, what about those with mental health problems?

The reality is that Western healthcare systems have still not grasped mental problems very well. People are often prescribed drugs for the duration of their unhappiness – a temporary solution that doesn't seem to address the problems that lie at the heart of a person's discontent. It’s much better to visit a specialist inpatient mental health treatment center. However, looking into Ayurveda won’t cause any harm either.

Ayurveda approaches to mental health have existed for many thousands of years in India. This is because of the way in which Ayurvedic knowledge views the mind. Issues arising mentally are thought to be as a result of imbalances within one's mind. It arises from a lack of understanding that can often be triggered by a stressful event – such as bereavement, end of a relationship or loss of employment. It is not that Ayurvedic approaches ignore the external influences that affect our lives, but rather these approaches reduce our need and want to dwell on past trauma and hurt. This, according to Ayurvedic therapy, is the key to solving mental problems. So mental trauma is intrinsically dealt with as part of advanced Ayurveda diploma learning courses.

Can It Help Cancer Sufferers?

A diploma in Ayurvedic medical science is something that many people look for when trying to improve the quality of their own (or a loved one's) health and well-being. Many people with terminal or non-terminal cancer look past Western practice to Ayurveda science to find ways to alleviate their pain and discomfort. So can a medical diploma in Ayurveda help?

The pressing question that is always asked by cancer sufferers, and their loved ones, is whether or not Ayurvedic sciences are suited to their condition. The reality is that Ayurveda is suitable for all people – irrespective of their physical, mental or emotional state. When one embraces Ayurvedic practice and sciences, they are taking control of their well-being. Ayurvedic medicine and science take the approach that we have the ability to alleviate our pain and suffering.

For some people, this can result in the complete relief of physical pain; for others, it may just bring about a new attitude and mental strength when dealing with such a trying time. As such, Ayurvedic knowledge sciences can offer relief for a cancer sufferer. Even Cancer Research UK, the country's biggest cancer medical sciences charity, has much anecdotal evidence from sufferers who have said that

Ayurvedic treatments and practices have helped them to cope with cancer and distressing cancer treatments. Those who are cancer sufferers, or have loved ones who are cancer sufferers, should look to do an Ayurveda diploma course to increase their learning of Ayurvedic medical approaches.
