What Should I Blog About? A Beginner’s Guide to Choosing a Blogging Niche

Excited to get started with blogging? Dreaming about having thousands of readers and making a great living from something you actually enjoy?

There’s no doubt about it: Blogging can be both fun and lucrative! But before you go rushing in and start taking over the blogosphere, you’ll first need to decide what the heck you’re going to write about…

What Should I Blog About?

If you want to be successful, it is important to spend some time choosing the right niche. You’ll want to blog about something you enjoy, but at the same time it’s also important to choose an area that will actually make you some money.

While we can’t choose a niche for you, here are some helpful ideas to help you make a decision.

Come Up With Some Initial Ideas

Firstly, sit down and brainstorm some ideas. It doesn’t really matter whether they are good or bad at this stage – the whole point is to come up with as many ideas as possible and then do some further research to narrow them down.

What subjects are you passionate about?

Think about your hobbies and interests. What do you enjoy doing? What are you passionate about?

It is definitely a good idea to choose a niche you actually enjoy. If you’re going to be writing about a particular topic for the next five years, you’d better make sure it is something you find interesting!

As well as helping you to stay motivated, passion and enthusiasm for the subject will also come across in your writing – and it’ll ultimately help you to be more successful.

What are you knowledgeable about?

Think carefully about the things you are already knowledgeable about. Is there a particular subject that friends and family always ask you about? Do you have knowledge in a specialist area?

Don’t just think about your education or career background. Knowledge gained from hobbies, interests and everyday life is every bit as valuable.

Of course, you don’t have to be an “expert” in the subject or know every single thing about it. You can be a leading learner, which simply means that you know more about the subject than the person reading your blog. The idea is to keep learning and share your knowledge as you go. Believe me, people absolutely love this!

Which blogs do you already read?

Think about the blogs you already read. Is there a particular blog that you visit on a regular basis? Could you start a blog about a similar topic?

In addition, think about the content that is missing from these blogs. Is there an obvious gap that existing bloggers in this niche are failing to address? Perhaps you could cover the same subject but from a slightly different angle?

The idea here isn’t to copy, but the honest truth is that it is impossible to choose a completely unique niche. If there aren’t any other blogs covering this topic, the chances are that there isn’t a market, either.

Narrow Down Your Ideas

By now you should have come up with a list of ideas. We now need to do a bit more research to narrow down these ideas and ultimately make a final decision…

Is there an audience?

You might be extremely passionate about a particular topic, but that’s no use if nobody else is remotely interested in it. Consider how many blogs already exist in this niche. If there are a lot, there’s definitely interest in the subject.

Is it a profitable niche?

If you’re looking to make money from your blog, you’ll want to ensure that the niche has the potential to be profitable.

How many products exist in this market? Will you be able to find products you could recommend as an affiliate? How many people are searching for information about this topic each month?

Will you be able to stand out?

If there are already millions of blogs in this niche, will you be able to stand out? Blogging can be extremely competitive, so you’ll need to think carefully about how you could differentiate your blog from the rest.

Are you happy to write about this subject indefinitely?

As we have already mentioned, it is important to choose a topic you are passionate about. Even if there is money to be made, there’s no point in entering a niche that will bore you to tears.

Final Words

What should I blog about? Ultimately, there’s no right or wrong answer to that question, but we hope that this article has provided you with some food for thought. While it’s important to think carefully about this and do some research, you ultimately just need to make a decision and get on with it.
